Broken Mirrors

I broke my mirror today.

You know those full-length, stand on their own, considerably expensive mirrors? Yeah, it's broken.

No, I did not purposely throw it down to the ground in a fit of rage and smash it to smithereens. Nor did I take it out behind the woodshed and show it a thing or two with a handy dandy shotgun. No indeed - it was entirely an accident.

So do you know what I did when it fell down and the realization of what had happened came over me?

"You're on the throne, You're on the throne, You're on the throne."

You see, one of my dear friends recently reminded me that having an eternal perspective is so vital in life. So I took that to the bank this morning and came away with a little gold nugget of my own. Ready for it?

We all need to break our mirrors.

Now hold it! I'm not saying that you should hunt down every mirror in your house and go all UFC on them - I'm saying that we as God's people have been accepting what the world says about body image and the importance of popularity as if it were true, and we need to break that bond. We've been looking in the mirror and judging ourselves - not just our bodies - from a very tainted perspective. We see flaws and shortcomings way sooner than we see goodness and ability. This causes us to spend countless hours slaving away - or merely taking multiple trips on the complain train - hoping things can be different. Wishing things would change. Change to conform to what? The world's warped, air-brushed, unachievable standard of perfection?

So here's the challenge: take authority over this area spiritually by capturing all worldly thoughts and making them obedient to Christ. Spend less time in the mirror and more time in the Word and prayer. Ask Jesus to kill the negative perspective you've had of yourself, and choose to seek out what His Word says about you. Spend time alone with Him so that you become conformed to His image. Feast Your soul on the goodness of His presence.

Go ahead - break your mirror! I can guarantee that your view of yourself will change for the better.
