A Life Lesson Worth Learning Early

Today I learnt something that I've learnt in the past, but being human as I am I completely forgot it and leapt face first into stupidity.

We're taught not to assume, right? Well today I learnt that even if the evidence clearly suggests one thing, do not assume that you know best and forge onward with said "fact." You could, in fact, be looking at something with a biased perspective and therefore have a skewed image of the whole truth.

I'm reminded of the three blind men who examined an elephant to determine what it was like. One grabbed the tail and said that it was only a small animal. One grabbed a leg and said that it was wide and strong, like a tree. The other grabbed its trunk and described it as being a very, very large snake.* The point is this: each of them only caught onto a glimpse into the full "animal", the entire truth. Don't run with your information till you've thought about the options and asked people for their side of the story. Could be you only caught the tail end. And in that one blind man's instance, that was literally his issue.

With a renewed desire for good assumptions and the whole truth,
Cayla Renae <3

* Totally a Cayla paraphrase. I'm probably quite off on my relay of this story. My apologies.

  1. I actually didn't know you had a blog! I love it, totally cool to hear a familiar voice coming out through the words! totally impressed and can't wait to continually take a break from my school work and read your insights! <3

P.S the elephant story is classic example in psychology to explain the importance of context, but I have never attributed it to absolute truth as well, so thanks for that :)
